Villages with a different atmosphere, fjords, glaciers and high mountains, world heritage landscapes in Nærøydalen valley and the Nærøyfjord, Flåm railway, Vøringsfossen waterfall and Bergen city is all in reach if you choose to stay and explore from Voss.
The villages in the Voss surroundings are communities with its own history and traditions, where you may experience an atmosphere that is somewhat different from the atmosphere in Voss town itself.
Myrkdalen has grown from being a small farming village in Voss municipality to becoming a destination in itself. Here you will find accommodation for all tastes; hotels, cabins, apartments or campsites. Myrkdalen is a great location for walking in the summer and autumn, whilst skiing is the main activity in winter.
Vinje has accommodation in Vinje Turisthotel, a petrol station and a local supermarket. If travelling by car you will have to decide whether you should follow the Rv 13 north to Myrkdalen and across Vikafjellet mountain or take the E16 east to Oppheim and Stalheim.
Oppheim is idyllically located by Lake Oppheimsvatnet. You have several options for accommodation, attractions and activities both in Oppheim and in Haugsvik (the area at the end of the lake).
Stalheim is the main gateway to the world heritage landscape in Nærøydalen valley and the Nærøyfjord. You can stay overnight in Stalheim Hotel and cabins. The area has several great walks and attractions such as Stalheimskleiva, Sivlefossen and Stalheimsfossen - also highlights on several of the round trips in the area.
Bordalen is a valley with road as far as Rong (approx. 15 kilometres) where you can stay at Rong Fjellstove. From here there are mountain gravel roads that take you further into the mountains, to Almenningen and towards Grungane and a marked trail to Ålvik in Hardanger. A bit closer to town you will find Husdyrparken. Bordalen Round trip is a nice bike ride.
East of Voss the Bergen railway runs along the Raundalen Valley which extends 40 kilometres, passing Mjølfjell to Upsete. Raundalen features varied scenery and rich opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. Here you will find deep ravines, vast forested areas, steep mountains and Raundalselva river, popular amongst river kayakers. Mjølfjell Mountain Lodge offers activities and is a great starting point for walks in the mountains, both summer and winter. Rallarvegen ends in Mjølfjell. A nice bike ride is to take the local train to Upsete and cycle Rallarvegen and the paved road back to Voss town.
